Director's Statement

Throughout our history the Jewish people have endured unspeakable hardships. Our survival has been miraculous in the face of countless challenges. One source of our strength emanates from our sense of community. It is in our spiritual genes to be a compassionate people and to help those in need as they meet whatever challenges they are sent.
Tzfat is geographically isolated and historically poor. We have endured three years of political upheaval and find ourselves spiraling downward economically. Increasing numbers of families are unable to adequately feed themselves, let alone heat their homes, enjoy the luxury of a telephone or even pay their regular bills. Those fortunate to have a job often discover that their salary may be withheld for even six months or even longer. Despite this situation, it is heartwarming to note that even though resources are thin, people in Tzfat try to help each other in small ways such as bringing a chicken to a friend for a Shabbat meal. ‘Lev U’Neshama’ turned to, and depends upon, the compassion and generosity of those who live outside of Israel , our friends in the Jewish and Christian communities. Your partnership in this crucial, humanitarian work makes it possible for us to respond to the needs of Tzfat families.
‘Lev U’Neshama’ began its present programming in December 2002. We reach out to all Jews in our community: religious and secular, Ashkenazim and Sepharadim, immigrants and natives. The mitzvah seeds, which you have been planting, have yielded much in the past three years. There has been a positive and uplifting effect on the lives of hundreds of adults and children. You have helped us to provide food to nourish the soul, clothing to warm the body, shoes so children can attend school, eyeglasses to enable adults and children to see properly as well as dental assistance, as funds will allow. We pray that we will continue to have the merit to warrant your continued support.
With blessings of peace and good health,
Rabbi Yisroel Rottenberg
